48 summers.
One mission.
Since 1978 the Pécs Summer Theatre has been the meeting point of Hungarian theatrical tradition and experiment — at the Káptalan ruin garden and the Bóbita Puppet Theatre.
How did it begin?
1The Pécs Open-Air Stage opened to the public in 1953 in an 18th-century late-Baroque canon's garden in the heart of Káptalan Street. For decades the most popular Hungarian and international ensembles performed here, making it a defining point in the city's cultural life.
In 1978 director László Bagossy, artistic director Imre Eck and choreographer Antal Vidákovics opened a new chapter: as the home of the Pécs Summer Theatre, the venue restarted as the Open-Air Dance Stage.
It reopened in 2004 under the Pécs Croatian Theatre. In 2019 the Pécs Ballet and Made in Pécs together rebuilt the venue with an investment of roughly 200 million HUF — stage, roof, auditorium and infrastructure. This is when the name and concept Káptalan Kert — music, theatre, life, free was born.
Today the renovated venue welcomes audiences as a 480-seat, accessible, roofed open-air stage.

Tickets & info →What happens if it rains?
- We do not cancel shows in advance due to bad weather — please come to the venue with your ticket.
- We do not provide weather forecasts in advance.
- Any cancellation is announced by 5:00 p.m. on the day on the [Pécs Summer Theatre Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/pecsinyariszinhaz). No announcement means the show is going ahead.
- Umbrellas are not allowed in the audience area — please bring a raincoat in bad weather.
- If at the official start (9:00 p.m.) or during the first act the weather forces a break, we wait up to 60 minutes before continuing.
- If after 60 minutes the show still can't continue, it is moved to the designated rain day — your ticket is valid on that day, refunds are not possible.
- If bad weather interrupts the second act (or the second half of a one-act show), the performance is considered complete — no refund.
- If a show has no designated rain day and is cancelled on site: tickets refundable within 3 working days at the point of purchase (online: automatic refund within 5 working days).
- Please keep your ticket until the end — for an interrupted show, this is what gets you in on the rain day.
- Páratlan páros (24 and 25 July 2026, shared rain day: 26 July):
– If the 24 July show is cancelled: tickets bought for 24 July are valid on 26 July.

– If both shows are cancelled: 24 July tickets are valid on 26 July; 25 July tickets are automatically refunded within 5 working days at the point of purchase.
